Competition 2020

The schedule for the 2020 PhD candidate selection is as follow:

* Until February 2nd, 2020: Call for proposals for the advisors using ADUM.
* From February 3rd to April 23rd, 2020: On line applications opens.
* May 15th, 2020: Selection on files.
* From June 2nd to 8th, 2020: Interview of selected candidates in Paris Observatory.
* June 9th, 2020: First jury.
* July 1st, 2020: Final jury selection.

PhD advisor are invited to submit their PhD projets from their ADUM account[^1].

These PhD thesis topics are found on either (or both) of the following two lists:

PhD advisors are required to state whether they a grant from the Doctoral School or whether they have secured or applied for a grant on other calls. It is possible to select both choices, especially if the grant is not yet secured. Please be specific on the grant envisionned, its current status and if any action from the Doctoral School is required to secure the grant.

Application

Applications must be submitted online, from February 3 to April 23, 2020, clicking on the Candidater button at the top left of the web page describing the PhD subject. No other records will be accepted either by email or standard mail. You will receive an acknowledgment of receipt from the Doctoral School. If you think you have correctly completed your file, but do not receive an acknowledgment of receipt, please contact the Doctoral School directly at ecole-doctorale.astro@obspm.fr.

To apply for a PhD Project, navigate to the webpage describing the subject, and click on the Candidater button located at the top left of the page.

The application must contain the following documents:

  1. A complete resume or CV detailing previous research experiences and in particular their actual duration.
  2. A cover letter explaining how you built your project to do a thesis in astrophysics, the qualities, skills and expertise you have acquired to undertake this project
  3. A copy of all academic results, with all the notes.

These documents must imperatively be deposited in your application file by 15 April 2020 at the latest.

At least one letter of recommendation from a person other than the thesis director must reach the Doctoral School by email ecole-doctorale.astro@obspm.fr.

Supervisors endorse or do not endorse your application via ADUM before the selection on file. If you did not contact the supervisor, the endorsement is likely to be negative!

If your application is selected for interview

  1. A copy of the diploma giving access to the thesis (Master) or an attestation indicating the date of the corresponding jury,
  2. The Master’s thesis manuscript,

must reach the ED before the final jury by email ecole-doctorale.astro@obspm.fr.

Double application

It is suggested to apply on two different subjects (classified A and B), in laboratories belonging to different institutions, in order to leave some flexibility to the jury in awarding contracts. However, do not apply to more than two subjects!

  • The ED AAIF is saddened to learn of the death of one of its alumni, Paul de Fromont, who completed his thesis at LUTH with Jean-Michel Alimi in 2016. We offer our condolences to Diane, his wife, and to all his family and friends.
